ACDB at the annual SAAB Conference 2020

As the winner of the Best Young Botanist for his presentation at the annual South African Association of Botanists (SAAB) Conference 2019, Ryan Rattray was afforded the opportunity to present a Plenary Talk on his research at the SAAB 2020 Conference hosted at the University of the Free State Qwa-Qwa Campus.

His talk titled, “The quality control conundrum: Utilising multi-disciplinary techniques to authenticate and regulate herbal products in South Africa”, presented challenges in ensuring correct raw materials are collected and authenticated for use in commercial herbal products not only globally, but within South Africa as well. Furthermore, the talk looked at combining different disciplines such as genetic and chemical methods to correctly and robustly verify plant material identities.  Ryan was one of two UJ Plenary Speakers, the other was Prof Annah Moteetee, who is currently the Head of Department for the Department of Botany.
