Masters Student/ DNA Barcoding Technician


Sydney completed his Honours degree in Botany at the University of Venda in 2013. His research project was titled: An Inventory of Indigenous Medicinal Plants Used in the Treatment of Thrush and Related Infections in Vhembe District Municipality, Limpopo province, South Africa.

In 2013, he joined ACDB as a DNA Barcoding technician (Intern), where he is pursuing his MSc. in Botany under the supervision of Prof. Michelle van der Bank. His current research project is titled “Molecular phylogeny of the Fadogia-Rytigynia group and closely related genera within Vanguerieae”. This study is aimed to resolve the taxonomy and phylogenetic relationships of the Fadogia-Rytigynia group within Vanguerieae.
